Jericho (Tas.), TAS

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Jericho is a tiny historic village in the Southern Midlands of Tasmania, on the old Heritage Highway about 14 kilometres south-west of Oatlands. It was named by the explorer Hugh Germain, a Royal Marine who is said to have carried a Bible and a copy of the Arabian Nights and drew on both when naming places he passed. Founded in 1816, it is one of the oldest townships in Australia. A convict probation station built here in 1840 housed around 200 men who worked on the Hobart to Launceston road, and fine colonial sandstone bridges, culverts and cottages from that era still line the route. St James Church, completed in 1888, holds the grave of John Hutton Bisdee, the first Tasmanian awarded the Victoria Cross.
