Ivanhoe (Vic.), VIC

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Ivanhoe is a leafy, established suburb of Melbourne, about nine kilometres north-east of the city centre in the City of Banyule, with the Yarra River forming its southern boundary and Darebin Creek its western edge. The suburb and many of its streets take their names from the novel Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott, a fashionable choice when the area was first settled in the eighteen-fifties. An early hotel and the farming homestead Chelsworth date from that decade, and a railway reached the district by the late eighteen-eighties. The grandest local landmark is the former Heidelberg Town Hall, a handsome art-deco building of 1937 crowned by a clock tower with a green neon face, now an events venue known as The Centre Ivanhoe. Beside it, the Ivanhoe Library and Cultural Hub opened in 2021.
