Highgate (SA), SA

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Highgate is a leafy, established suburb in Adelaide's inner south, set within the City of Unley and surrounded by Fullarton and Malvern. European settlement dates from the late eighteen-thirties, when the land was taken up for farming estates. One early holding was named Rosefield after Rosina Ferguson, the wife of its owner, while a neighbouring section was developed by the colonist George White as a formal garden and vineyard. The suburb itself was laid out in the early eighteen-eighties as Highgate-on-the-Hill by F.J. Botting, who named it after the English town of his birth; the name was later shortened simply to Highgate. Local landmarks include the Rosefield Uniting Church on Carlton Street, the long-running Highgate School on Hampstead Avenue, and Concordia College, giving the quiet residential streets a settled, traditional character.
