Henty (NSW), NSW
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Henty is a small town in the Riverina and South West Slopes of New South Wales, about 65 kilometres north of Albury and 63 kilometres south-west of Wagga Wagga. The district was known to the Wiradjuri as 'Dudal Comer', said to mean 'sweetest water', and the original village was called Doodle Cooma. It was renamed in 1886 after the Henty family of early pastoralists, the railway from Sydney having reached the area in 1880; the bushranger Dan Morgan had shot a police sergeant nearby in 1864. Henty's place in history was secured in 1914, when local farmer Headlie Taylor invented the header harvester, transforming grain harvesting worldwide. The town now hosts the Henty Machinery Field Days each September, drawing more than 60,000 visitors.
