Gundagai, NSW

Gundagai is a historic town in the Riverina region of southern New South Wales, set on the Murrumbidgee River about 390 kilometres south-west of Sydney and 160 kilometres west of Canberra. It lies on the lands of the Wiradjuri people. The town's name is of Aboriginal origin, though its exact meaning is uncertain. Gundagai was gazetted in 1838, and the devastating Murrumbidgee flood of 1852, among the most destructive in colonial Australia, later prompted rebuilding on higher ground. The wrought-iron Prince Alfred Bridge dates from 1867, and the famous Dog on the Tuckerbox monument, unveiled in 1932, honours the district's pioneers. Long celebrated in Australian song and verse, the surrounding country supports sheep, cattle and grain farming.
