Gulargambone, NSW

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Gulargambone is a small town on the Castlereagh River in the central-west plains of New South Wales, in Coonamble Shire and in Wiradjuri country. Its name is generally taken to derive from a Wiradjuri term meaning 'watering place of many birds', or 'place of galahs', and the galah has become the town's emblem. Gulargambone was gazetted as a village in 1883 and grew as a service centre for the surrounding sheep and wheat country. The town is known for its community spirit: it opened one of Australia's first community-owned post offices in 2000, and its old buildings now house '2828', a community centre with a cafe and gift shop named after the local postcode. It won a state Tidy Towns award in 2005.
