Guildford (WA), WA
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Guildford is a historic riverside suburb of Perth, set where the Helena River meets the Swan about twelve kilometres north-east of the city within the City of Swan. Founded in 1829 at a reliable freshwater crossing, it was one of the very first settlements of the Swan River Colony and for a time its principal town, before Perth grew to overtake it. That early importance has left Guildford unusually rich in heritage: it is one of only a handful of metropolitan towns listed by the National Trust, and counts among its old buildings St Matthew's Church, the colonial-era council chambers and town hall, and the converted stables that now house the Garrick Theatre — the oldest theatre group in Western Australia. It is also home to the state's oldest government primary school.
