Griffith is a regional city in the Riverina of south-western New South Wales, at the heart of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area about 570 kilometres south-west of Sydney. It was created by the state government in the early twentieth century to settle farmers on land watered from the Murrumbidgee River, and was named after Arthur Hill Griffith, the New South Wales Secretary for Public Works. Its distinctive street plan, with circular avenues radiating across the town, was designed in 1914 by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin, the architects of Canberra. Declared a town in 1916 and a city in 1987, Griffith is now one of the country's great food bowls, famous for its wine, citrus and a large Italian-Australian community.
