Goomalling, WA

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Goomalling is a small town in the Wheatbelt of Western Australia, about 132km northeast of Perth and 45km north-northeast of Northam. The name comes from a Noongar word meaning roughly 'the place of the silver-grey possum', from 'goomal', the Noongar name for that animal. George Slater took up the first property near Goomalling Spring in the early 1850s, an agricultural hall opened in 1898, and the railway from Northam reached the district in 1902, prompting the surveyed townsite gazetted in 1903. Wheat and other cereals underpin the local economy, and the town serves as a Co-operative Bulk Handling receival point. Wide streets and grain silos mark the small farming centre.
