Gnowangerup is a town in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, about 355 kilometres south-east of Perth and 60 kilometres from Katanning. The traditional owners of the area are the Goreng people of the Noongar nation. The town takes its name from a nearby creek and spring, from a Noongar word meaning roughly 'the place where the mallee hen nests', the mallee hen or gnow being a bird that builds large nesting mounds. The townsite was gazetted in 1908 and the railway reached it a few years later. Today Gnowangerup sits at the heart of a Great Southern wheat and sheep district and serves as a grain-receival point for the surrounding farms.
