Evandale (Tas.), TAS

Evandale is a village in northern Tasmania, on the South Esk River about 18 kilometres south of Launceston. The area lies within the country of the North Midlands people, most likely the Panninher clan. One of the first land grants was made to David Gibson in 1809, and the settlement was named Evansdale in 1829 before becoming Evandale in 1836, in honour of the Surveyor-General George William Evans. The village is admired for its largely intact late-Georgian and early-Victorian streetscape, including Clarendon House, a grand 1836 mansion now held by the National Trust. Each year Evandale hosts the National Penny Farthing Championships, with riders on tall vintage bicycles. The colonial landscape painter John Glover lived and worked nearby.
