Emmaville, NSW
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Emmaville is a former tin-mining town in the New England Tablelands of northern New South Wales, about 45km north-west of Glen Innes and high on the granite country at around 890 metres. It lies on the lands of the Ngarabal people, whose name for the place, Marran, is said to mean 'plenty of leeches'. Tin was found nearby in 1872 and a busy field grew up, first called Vegetable Creek after the Chinese market gardens that fed the diggers, before being renamed in 1882 after Emma Greville, wife of the state governor. Today the Emmaville Mining Museum keeps that history alive with a noted mineral collection, and the surrounding hills remain popular with fossickers.
