Eden, NSW
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Eden is a coastal town on the far south coast of New South Wales, about 480 kilometres south of Sydney and some 50 kilometres south of Bega. The Thaua, or Thawa, people of the Yuin nation are the traditional custodians of the district. The town was named after George Eden, the 1st Earl of Auckland, a British colonial secretary, and was proclaimed a township in 1885. It overlooks Twofold Bay, often described as one of the deepest natural harbours in the southern hemisphere. Eden grew up around whaling, carried on from the 1820s until 1930, and remains a busy fishing port. That heritage is preserved at the Eden Killer Whale Museum, home to the skeleton of Old Tom, while migrating whales now draw watchers each winter.
