Eastwood (NSW), NSW

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Eastwood is a suburb in the north of Sydney, about 17 kilometres north-west of the central business district and split between the City of Ryde and the City of Parramatta. The Wallumedegal people lived across the timbered country between the Lane Cove and Parramatta rivers long before European settlement, which followed soon after the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788. The free settler William Rutledge bought land here in 1835 and built a house he called Eastwood; when the railway reached the area in the 1880s, the station and then the suburb took the name of his Eastwood Estate. Eastwood is celebrated as the birthplace of the Granny Smith apple, accidentally raised by the orchardist Maria Ann Smith, an achievement marked each October by the lively Granny Smith Festival. In recent decades, Chinese and Korean migration has reshaped the suburb into one of Sydney's best-known Asian shopping precincts.
