Eaglehawk Neck, TAS

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Eaglehawk Neck is a small settlement in south-east Tasmania, on the narrow isthmus that joins the Tasman Peninsula to the Forestier Peninsula. In convict days this slender neck of land was the key to the Port Arthur penal settlement: from 1831 a line of chained dogs, known as the Dog Line, was stationed across it to stop prisoners escaping to the mainland. The area is also known for striking coastal geology, including the Tessellated Pavement, the Tasman Arch, the Devils Kitchen and a blowhole, and its surf beaches are popular today. The locality was given the dual name Eaglehawk Neck / Teralina in 2021, recognising its Aboriginal heritage. It remains a quiet holiday and fishing spot at the gateway to the Tasman Peninsula.
