Dunkeld (Vic.), VIC
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Dunkeld stands at the southern gateway to the Grampians in western Victoria, about 283km west of Melbourne and 33km north-east of Hamilton, beneath the dramatic peaks of Mount Sturgeon and Mount Abrupt. The Djab wurrung people are the Traditional Owners and lived across this region for more than 4,000 years before European arrival. First known as Mount Sturgeon after the nearby summit, the town was renamed by largely Scottish settlers after Dunkeld in Scotland; its post office opened in 1852. Wool built the early town, but tourism is now the mainstay, drawing walkers and diners to the foot of the ranges. The grand Royal Mail Hotel, the last of five original pubs, anchors the village.
