Derby (Tas.), TAS
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Derby is a small former tin-mining town in north-east Tasmania, set on the Ringarooma River about 100 kilometres east of Launceston. It lies on the traditional lands of the Trawlwoolway people of the island's north-east. Tin was found in the area in 1874, and the rich Briseis Mine that followed made Derby a thriving mining centre by the late nineteenth century. In April 1929 the Briseis Dam collapsed after torrential rain, sending a torrent through the town that destroyed buildings and brought the mining era to a close. Derby found new life from 2015 as the home of the Blue Derby trails, an acclaimed mountain-biking network of more than 125 kilometres that now draws tens of thousands of visitors each year.
