Cranbrook (WA), WA

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Cranbrook is a small town in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, about 320km south of Perth between Katanning, Kojonup and Mount Barker. To the Noongar people the area is known as Twonkup or Dwangup and was a traditional meeting place of the Menang, Goreng and Kaneang groups; the European name was taken from Cranbrook in Kent, England, and is thought to have been chosen by a manager of the Western Australian Land Company that built the railway. The town grew around a station on the Great Southern Railway from 1889 and was gazetted in 1899. Farming sustains the district, with a Cooperative Bulk Handling grain receival point in town, and Cranbrook bills itself as the Gateway to the Stirlings for the nearby Stirling Range National Park.
