Corinna, TAS
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Corinna is a remote settlement deep in the wilderness of north-west Tasmania, set on the Pieman River where the Savage River joins it, roughly 138 kilometres south-west of Wynyard and ringed by West Coast rainforest. Its name, recorded as kurina, is said to be the Aboriginal name for the Pieman River; the place was originally known as Royerine. The town was proclaimed in 1894 and the surrounding locality gazetted in 1959. Since 2005 the whole of Corinna has been leased to a wilderness-tourism operator and run as a quiet retreat, a base for travellers exploring the Pieman River and the surrounding Tarkine.
