Coogee (NSW), NSW
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Coogee is a beachside suburb in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, about 8 km south-east of the city centre in the City of Randwick. Its sheltered surf beach — with Wedding Cake Island lying offshore — anchors a relaxed seaside strip of pubs, cafes and ocean baths, among them the historic Wylie's Baths and the women's-and-children's McIver's Baths. The popular coastal walk to Bondi runs along its cliffs, and Dolphin Point holds a memorial to the 2002 Bali bombings. The name comes from a local Aboriginal word, variously recorded as koojah or koo-chai, describing the smell of drying seaweed along the shore.
