Cleveland (Tas.), TAS

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Cleveland is a small rural locality in the Northern Midlands of Tasmania, about 38km south-east of Longford in the island's central farming country. Unusually, the place is said to take its name not from a person or a far-off town but from a breed of horse: it was named in the 1830s for the Cleveland horses then being imported and bred in the district. Formally gazetted as a locality in 1972, Cleveland today is a quiet settlement among the grazing and cropping land of the surrounding Midlands. Its old church stands among the handful of buildings that mark the village, a reminder of the district's nineteenth-century roots.
