Cherrybrook, NSW
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Cherrybrook sits in Sydney's leafy Hills District, about 29 kilometres north-west of the city centre within Hornsby Shire. The area began as orchard country: Joseph Harrison settled here in 1839, planting fruit trees and building a timber home he called Cherrybrook Cottage. The name is thought to have come from the cherry trees grown beside the creek that crossed the property, which later passed to Eric Vaux, who ran it as a dairy while keeping the Cherrybrook name. In 1959 the land was subdivided to create what is often described as Sydney's first project home village, and steady growth followed through the 1980s and 1990s. Many streets honour native plants and colonial architects, and Cherrybrook railway station opened on the Sydney Metro network in 2019.
