Carine, WA

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Carine is a quiet, well-treed residential suburb of Perth, about fourteen kilometres north of the city in the City of Stirling. Its name comes from two wetlands recorded in an eighteen-sixty-five survey as Big Carine Swamp and Small Carine Swamp, and the district once formed part of the Hamersley Estate, held by a family who had settled on the coast in the eighteen-thirties. The land stayed largely rural until the nineteen-sixties, given over to timber reserves, market gardens and a dairy, before the modern suburb was laid out progressively through the nineteen-seventies and eighties. At its heart lies Carine Regional Open Space, a broad wetland reserve around the old swamps that shelters waterbirds, frogs and turtles and is laced with walking and cycling tracks. Local shops and good schools round out its appeal.
