Canley Vale, NSW
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Canley Vale is a suburb in the south-west of Sydney, about thirty kilometres from the central business district, in the local government area of the City of Fairfield. The wider Fairfield district is the country of the Cabrogal clan of the Darug nation. The statesman Sir Henry Parkes settled here in the nineteenth century and named his mansion Canley Grange after his birthplace of Canley in Coventry, England; he also named the local railway station, while the word vale simply means a valley or dale. For many years Canley Vale and neighbouring Cabramatta were treated as a single community under the shared name Cabravale, which still lives on in the Cabravale Diggers rugby league club. Today the suburb is home to a thriving Vietnamese community, with Buddhist temples such as Thien An.
