Camperdown (Vic.), VIC

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Camperdown lies in south-western Victoria about 190 kilometres west of Melbourne, set at the foot of Mount Leura amid the volcanic 'Lakes and Craters' country, with the crater lakes Bullen Merri and Gnotuk to the west and Lake Purrumbete to the east. The Djargurd Wurrung people are the traditional owners of the district. The town is named after the Earl of Camperdown, the admiral Adam Duncan. The Manifold brothers settled here from the late 1830s, the town was surveyed in 1851, and the post office opened in 1854. Its landmarks include the elm-lined Manifold Street median and the Gothic Manifold Clock Tower of 1897, and it is a gateway towards the Otway Ranges and the Great Ocean Road.
