Camberwell (Vic.), VIC

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Camberwell is an established inner-eastern suburb of Melbourne, about ten kilometres east of the city in the City of Boroondara. The area is part of the lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation. Its name recalls the south London district of Camberwell, after an early settler was reminded of the way three roads met there, an intersection still known today as Camberwell Junction. Known for grand period residences and quiet, leafy streets, Camberwell is regarded as one of Melbourne's most prestigious suburbs. The Burke Road shopping strip, where three tram routes converge, is among the busiest in suburban Melbourne. The Camberwell Sunday Market, run by a local Rotary club since the 1970s, draws crowds of stallholders. The actor Geoffrey Rush and comedian Barry Humphries are among its residents.
