Bunbury (WA), WA

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Bunbury is a coastal city in Western Australia's South West, about 175 kilometres south of Perth, set where the Leschenault Inlet opens onto Koombana Bay. In the Noongar language the area is known as Goomburrup, the country of the Wardandi people, part of the wider Noongar cultural bloc of the state's south-west. Founded in 1836 and named after the soldier-explorer Henry St Pierre Bunbury, it grew as a timber and railway port and remains a busy regional hub for mineral processing, farming, and tourism. The Dolphin Discovery Centre on Koombana Bay, the rugged Back Beach, and a lively arts and entertainment scene give the city its character today.
