Bracknell, TAS

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Bracknell is a rural town in northern Tasmania, set in the Meander Valley about 202km north of Hobart and 33km southwest of Launceston, with the Liffey River forming part of its boundary. The township was surveyed before 1859, when the first town blocks were auctioned, and a post office opened in 1872; by 1874 it had a church, two schools and a hotel. It was formally gazetted as a locality in 1968. Mixed farming sustains the district, including dairying, livestock and the poppies grown for Tasmania's pharmaceutical industry. A hotel has operated in the town since 1880, and the brick Methodist church, in its present form from 1922, remains a local landmark.
