Box Hill (Vic.), VIC
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Box Hill is an eastern suburb of Melbourne about 14 km from the city centre, in the City of Whitehorse. The Wurundjeri Woiwurrung people lived across this area for thousands of years, drawing on its creeks for food and water. Founded as a township in the 1850s — its name traced to the White Horse hotel of 1853 — Box Hill grew into a self-contained town with its own centre before being absorbed into greater Melbourne during its mid-twentieth-century eastward spread. Today it is one of the city's most important secondary centres: a major transport hub built around a busy underground railway station and tram terminus, home to the tallest towers outside the CBD, and known for a large and thriving Chinese-Australian community.
