Batemans Bay, NSW

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Batemans Bay is a coastal town at the mouth of the Clyde River on the New South Wales South Coast, roughly 280 kilometres south of Sydney in the Eurobodalla region. The area is the Country of the Walbunja people of the Yuin nation, who knew the locality as Yangary. Lieutenant James Cook charted and named the bay on 22 April 1770. Long a fishing and oyster-growing centre, the town is well known for its Clyde River oysters, and a road bridge spans the Clyde to link the two sides of the town. Today Batemans Bay is a popular holiday destination, its population swelling over summer with visitors drawn to its beaches, river estuary and the national parks of the surrounding coast.
