Wudinna, SA
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Wudinna lies on the Eyre Highway in the wheat country of central Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, about 570km north-west of Adelaide. The name comes from the Barngarla word 'Woodina', meaning 'granite hill'; the Barngarla people visited the area seasonally for ceremonial purposes. European settlement dates from 1861, and the township was proclaimed in 1916. Agriculture still employs much of the workforce, supported by granite quarrying. The town's signature landmark is Mount Wudinna, a heritage-listed granite inselberg, near which stands the 'Australian Farmer', an eight-metre granite sculpture honouring those who work the land. Wudinna was named Agricultural Town of the Year in 2023 and launched its Granite Rocks music festival the following year.
