Westbourne Park, SA

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Westbourne Park is an inner southern suburb of Adelaide, in the City of Mitcham, laid out in 1881 and named after Westbourne, a village in Sussex, England. Its tree-lined streets were largely built up in the first three decades of the twentieth century and still hold many houses of the period, from Queen Anne and mock-Tudor designs to red-brick Californian bungalows. The southern part of the suburb was first known as Cottonville, a name probably honouring George W. Cotton, who campaigned for dividing land into small holdings for the working man, and much of the ground was once planted with almond orchards. The name Westbourne Park was formally adopted by the City of Mitcham in 1945, and the older name Cottonville was folded into it to tidy up the district's overlapping subdivision names.
