Tintinara, SA

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Tintinara is a small town in the Murray and Mallee region of South Australia, about 190 kilometres south-east of Adelaide, in The Coorong District Council. The origin of its name is debated: it may come from a local Aboriginal man called Tin-Tin, or from the word 'tinlinyara', said to mean the stars in Orion's belt. Graziers brought the first sheep to the country in the 1840s, and the Boothby brothers established the Tintinara homestead. In 1865, new owners built a sixteen-stand shearing shed, now classified by the National Trust. The poor sandy soils were slow to yield, but clearing and trace elements turned the land into productive farms. The town sits on the Dukes Highway and the Adelaide to Melbourne railway line.
