Sevenhill, SA
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Sevenhill is a small settlement in the Clare Valley of South Australia's Mid North, about 130 kilometres north of Adelaide and just south of Clare. It was named in 1850 by an Austrian Jesuit priest, Aloysius Kranewitter, after the seven hills of Rome. The Jesuits planted vines and in 1851 founded Sevenhill Cellars, the oldest winery in the Clare Valley, originally established to make sacramental wine; it still operates today beside the historic St Aloysius' Church. For a time the village was home to St Aloysius' College, for several decades the only Roman Catholic college in the colony. The surrounding hills, at the head of the Hutt River, are now crossed by the popular Riesling Trail for walkers and cyclists.
