North Adelaide, SA

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

North Adelaide is a historic residential and dining district immediately north of the River Torrens, separated from the Adelaide city centre by the surrounding Park Lands. It was laid out as part of Colonel William Light's original 1837 plan for Adelaide, and is known today for its grand bluestone and heritage homes and the cafes, pubs and shops of O'Connell and Melbourne Streets. The nearby Adelaide Oval, one of the country's major cricket and football grounds, sits between the district and the river. North Adelaide was also the birthplace of the Nobel Prize–winning physicist William Lawrence Bragg.
