Henley Beach, SA

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Henley Beach is a beachfront suburb of Adelaide in the City of Charles Sturt, on the metropolitan coast between West Beach and Grange. Like a number of Adelaide's seaside suburbs it took its name from England — in this case Henley-on-Thames. The land was first granted to William Bartley in 1850 and changed hands over the following decades before a group of developers laid out the town of Henley Beach from 1877. Poor road access held the settlement back in its early years, but it grew over time into one of the colony's favoured stretches of coast. Today it remains a popular spot on Adelaide's coastline, drawing residents and visitors to its sandy foreshore.
