Hallett, SA

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Hallett is a small town in the Mid North of South Australia, about 32km north of Burra and 38km southeast of Jamestown. It was named after the pioneering pastoralist and politician John Hallett and laid out on his property, known as Willogoleechee. Town lots were first offered for sale in 1870, and Hallett sat on the railway line between Roseworthy and Peterborough until it closed in the early 1990s. The bluestone Wildongoleechie Hotel dates from 1868 and still trades, alongside a general store. Heritage sites include the Cappeedee Homestead and woolshed, and the town lies on the Heysen Trail. The polar explorer Sir Hubert Wilkins was born nearby at Mount Bryan East.
