Crystal Brook (SA), SA
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Crystal Brook is a town in the Mid North of South Australia, about 197km north of Adelaide at the foot of the southern Flinders Ranges. The explorer Edward John Eyre is credited with naming the area in 1839 after a clear, sparkling creek he came across. The Hundred of Crystal Brook was proclaimed in 1871 and the town surveyed in 1874 as wheat farming spread across the plains. It grew into a busy railway junction, and grain handling remains important to the district. Nearby Bowman Park, a former homestead reserve, sits on the Heysen Trail and offers walking among red gums and low ranges. The wide main street retains several stone buildings from the railway era.
