Clare (SA), SA

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Clare sits in the Mid North of South Australia, about 136 kilometres north of Adelaide, and gives its name to the surrounding Clare Valley — one of the country's oldest and most admired wine regions. The town was laid out in 1842 by the settler Edward Gleeson, who named it after County Clare in his native Ireland. Vines have grown in the valley since the early 1840s, and today more than forty cellar doors are scattered through the hills around the town, many strung along the Riesling Trail, a walking and cycling path that follows a former railway line south towards Auburn. Old stone buildings, the cellar doors around nearby Sevenhill and a run of small Mid North towns complete the picture.
