Berri, SA
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Berri is a town in the Riverland of South Australia, on the north bank of the Murray River about 240 kilometres north-east of Adelaide. Its name comes from the Aboriginal words bery bery, said to describe a wide bend in the river. The town began as a wood landing where paddle steamers refuelled, and grew rapidly after irrigation was introduced in 1910; it was proclaimed a town in 1911. Watered from the Murray, the surrounding district became a centre for citrus, grapes and wine, and Berri gave its name to the well-known fruit-juice brand founded there in 1943. Today it remains one of the main service towns of the Riverland, its economy still rooted in irrigated horticulture along the river.
